UK Launches £100 Million AI Start-up Fund for Public Services

Britain is seeking to use government procurement to strengthen its domestic AI industry while improving services ranging from healthcare to national security. Smaller companies have often struggled to win public contracts because they lack the revenue, cash reserves and track record of established suppliers. The initiative also comes amid mounting opposition to UK government contracts with US software group Palantir, sharpening debate over technological sovereignty, data governance and reliance on large foreign vendors.

HM Treasury and the Cabinet Office on August 31, 2026 launched the first competitions under the £100 million Sovereign AI R&D Procurement Scheme. The initial challenges cover NHS productivity, more efficient AI computing, integration of data and frontier AI across defence systems, and security testing for AI agents. Successful British start-ups may receive upfront payments where appropriate, work with participating departments on demonstrator-stage technology and retain the intellectual property they create, giving them a route to wider public-sector and commercial deployment.
