AI Helps Write More Than 95% of Coinbase's Code
Rapid advances in generative artificial intelligence and large language models are transforming software development across the global technology industry. Coinbase, a leading cryptocurrency exchange, sees AI as central to rebuilding its competitive edge and hopes the technology can restore the pace of research and development it achieved as a startup. The shift is redefining engineers' roles and highlighting how fintech companies can use automation to improve efficiency.
As of July 2026, Coinbase said AI helped write more than 95% of its code, more than double the 40% recorded in February. CEO Brian Armstrong said AI output was already equivalent to the work of 1,200 employees. After cutting 14% of its workforce, or about 700 people, in May, the company expects AI agents to handle work equivalent to that of 100,000 employees by 2030.
