Etsy’s Three-Pronged AI Push Gains Traction
Etsy’s marketplace is built around handmade, vintage and personalized goods, leaving it with a vast catalog that is harder to organize than standardized retail inventory. Generative AI matters because it can interpret both a shopper’s intent and the attributes of one-of-a-kind listings, improving discovery without reducing the marketplace to price and delivery speed. Etsy is therefore applying AI across the shopping journey as it seeks to deepen engagement and turn its differentiated supply into an advantage over larger e-commerce rivals.
On Etsy’s Aug. 6, 2026 second-quarter earnings call, Chief Executive Kruti Patel Goyal outlined three AI priorities: sharper personalization, making listings easier for external AI services to find and understand, and building native conversational tools for buyers and sellers. Traffic from outside AI shopping agents remains below 1% of Etsy’s total, but management said those visits convert at a significantly higher rate and carry a higher average order value. For the quarter ended June 30, Etsy marketplace GMS rose 7.5% to $2.583 billion, while revenue reached $668.3 million.

The history behind this eventEtsy Uses AI to Revive Buyer Growth
Etsy is turning to artificial intelligence and machine learning to improve product discovery across its sprawling marketplace, where millions of handmade, vintage and often unique listings can be difficult to match with buyers. The strategy matters as the company seeks to reverse declines in active shoppers and purchase frequency. New models create persistent buyer profiles that combine past behavior with real-time intent, allowing Etsy to personalize search, recommendations, push notifications and email marketing beyond a shopper’s stated query.
Results reported on April 29, 2026, showed Etsy had 86.6 million active buyers in the first quarter, down 2.1% from a year earlier but up sequentially for the first time in eight quarters. Gross buyer additions rose 4.8% to 11.9 million. Etsy’s mobile app, which generates about 47% of gross merchandise sales, posted an 11.2% increase in sales from a year earlier, accelerating from 6.6% in the previous quarter, while early model tests lifted add-to-cart rates and conversion.
