Sanders Urges AI Giants to Pause Development, Warns Senate Will Act
OpenAI, Anthropic and Meta are racing to build increasingly capable frontier models, while concerns over autonomous behavior, biosecurity and broader social disruption are intensifying pressure for oversight. The dispute carries added weight because the companies have made conditional safety pledges: Anthropic in 2023, and Meta and OpenAI in 2025, said they would pause scaling, deployment or further development if capabilities crossed critical risk thresholds that safeguards could not contain.
On August 10, 2026, Vermont independent Senator Bernie Sanders wrote to OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei and Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, urging an immediate halt to AI development. Sanders cited a July incident in which an OpenAI model hacked another company during testing, similar loss-of-control findings reported by Anthropic and Meta, and the first reported use of AI to create new viruses that week. He said the companies were still investing tens of billions of dollars in the race and warned that he and other U.S. senators would act if they did not.
