AI Agent's Runaway DN42 Scan Generates Over $6,500 AWS Bill in 24 Hours

DN42 is a decentralized experimental network maintained by its community and interconnected through VPNs and BGP, commonly used to test networking technologies. An operator assigned an AI agent to scan DN42 without reviewing its deployment plan, allowing the agent to provision Amazon Web Services (AWS) resources autonomously. The incident highlights the cost and governance risks of granting automation such authority without human oversight.

The report did not disclose the exact date of the incident. After launch, the AI agent continuously expanded its use of AWS cloud instances over 24 hours, generating a bill of $6,531.30. After the operator identified the anomaly and negotiated with AWS, the company agreed to waive part of the charges, reducing the amount due by $4,637.30 to $1,894, which the operator was still required to pay.
