Bitcoin's 20 Millionth Coin to Be Mined This Month, Final 1 Million Expected by 2140
Bitcoin's protocol caps issuance at 21 million coins, with miners receiving new coins through block rewards. Halvings roughly every four years progressively reduce the rate of new supply. Passing the 95% supply threshold does not mean the same amount is available to the market, as industry estimates suggest that about 4 million bitcoins are permanently inaccessible because their private keys have been lost.
The Bitcoin network produced its 20 millionth coin in mid-March 2026, leaving just 1 million before the 21 million cap is reached. As block rewards continue to halve, the final batch of new coins is expected to take about another 114 years to mine, until around 2140. Miners will then rely on transaction fees for revenue.
