Maduro Trial Set for June 2027 as Crypto Claims Fade
Former Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro’s prosecution in the United States has raised questions over cross-border criminal jurisdiction and the legal protections afforded to a head of state. His defense is relying on sovereign immunity as a central argument, setting up a potentially consequential dispute over whether a foreign court can try a former national leader captured by U.S. forces.
About six months after Maduro’s capture, a federal court in New York scheduled his trial for June 2027. Blockchain intelligence firm TRM Labs said its review of the U.S. indictment found no references to cryptocurrency, stablecoins or related transactions. The finding undercuts market speculation that prosecutors would portray the case as involving a Maduro-linked crypto empire.
