UK FCA Urges Social Platforms to Step Up Crackdown on Illegal Financial Promotions
“Finfluencers” use social media platforms to promote investments and financial products. In the UK, promotions by people who are neither authorized by the Financial Conduct Authority nor approved by an appropriately authorized firm may constitute a criminal offense. Such content often reaches younger investors, and victims may also lose access to protections from the Financial Ombudsman Service and the Financial Services Compensation Scheme.
The FCA reported enforcement results on April 24, 2026, from a joint operation involving 17 regulators that began on April 20. In the UK, Aaron Chalmers pleaded guilty, four warning letters were issued and 120 account-takedown requests were submitted. The accounts contained 1,267 illegal advertisements that reached at least 2,338,372 UK accounts, with 66% involving entities on the FCA Warning List.
