Dormant Bitcoin Worth $7.6 Billion Stirs as Selling Pressure Ebbs
Dormant bitcoin — coins that have remained unmoved for years — is closely watched as a gauge of potential supply from early holders, often called OGs. These investors typically control large positions acquired at much lower prices, so renewed activity can raise concerns about distribution into the market. On-chain transfers, however, do not necessarily mean the coins were sold.
More than 104,000 bitcoin that had been dormant for five to 15 years returned to circulation in 2026, with an estimated value of about $7.6 billion, according to on-chain data. Yet dormant-coin activity fell to a four-year low in the second quarter of 2026, suggesting that large-scale distribution by early holders has slowed. Market analysts view the easing pressure as constructive for bitcoin’s longer-term ownership structure.
