Musk Pledges to Open-Source X Code and Recommendation Algorithm

X’s recommendation system determines how posts are ranked and distributed, making its design central to debates over platform transparency, content governance and outside scrutiny. Elon Musk’s pledge to expose the social network’s underlying software would allow researchers and other third parties to test whether X operates as described. The announcement also follows a privacy controversy involving Grok Build, an AI coding assistant from Musk’s xAI, adding pressure for clearer safeguards around products tied to the Grok ecosystem.

Musk said X will open-source its full codebase and post-recommendation algorithm after completing a security review, while inviting independent parties to verify how the system works. As of July 20, 2026, X had not disclosed a completion date for the review or a timetable for releasing the code. The platform’s updated recommendation algorithm already uses the same Transformer architecture as the Grok model, according to the announcement, linking X’s content-ranking technology more closely to xAI’s model design.
