Chunghwa Telecom Expands AI Tree Carbon Surveys to Hualien

Chunghwa Telecom’s Tree Carbon Sink Citizen Scientist program trains corporate volunteers to measure tree height and trunk diameter and pairs field surveys with AI tools to build a standardized carbon-sink database. By linking schools, researchers and environmental groups, the initiative turns climate education into auditable local data, supporting campus carbon inventories, corporate ESG programs and Taiwan’s broader net-zero transition.

Chunghwa Telecom’s Hualien Operations Office held five training and field sessions from June 10 to July 3, 2026, partnering with the Hualien County Environmental Education Advisory Group, National Dong Hwa University and other organizations. It trained 65 citizen scientists and surveyed 724 trees across four schools, with results announced on July 8. The program has now trained more than 1,000 corporate volunteers and measured over 15,000 trees across Taiwan.
