Starbucks Deploys Green Dot Assist, Smart Q to Streamline Stores
Starbucks is deploying artificial intelligence as part of CEO Brian Niccol’s “Back to Starbucks” turnaround, which seeks to revive the coffeehouse as a “third place” while easing operational friction. The company has stressed that AI is intended to support baristas rather than replace them, freeing employees to focus on drink quality and customer interaction. The technology push sits alongside a $1 billion restructuring plan announced in October 2025 and a broader effort to simplify menus and improve service times.
Speaking at Salesforce’s Dreamforce conference in October 2025, Niccol said Green Dot Assist, piloted in 35 stores beginning in June, was being rolled out more broadly to answer baristas’ equipment and drink-making questions in real time. Smart Q sequences orders across counters, drive-thrus, mobile pickup and delivery, targeting service within four minutes for in-store and drive-thru customers while keeping mobile orders on schedule. Starbucks also plans to add AI-powered order prediction and voice ordering to its app.
