DeFi Protocol Closures Put Liquidity Back at the Center of Competition
Decentralized finance protocols rely on capital pools to support trading, lending and derivatives. Insufficient liquidity raises slippage and depresses yields, accelerating the departure of users and capital. The shutdowns of projects including Polynomial and MilkyWay show that technological innovation and marketing buzz cannot create a lasting competitive advantage unless they translate into sustained trading volume.
At least 10 crypto protocols have announced closures over the past two months, including derivatives protocol Polynomial and liquid-staking project MilkyWay. They did not shut down because of smart-contract or technical failures, but because they lacked enough users and sufficient capital depth to sustain operations. The market is therefore refocusing on liquidity scale, capital efficiency and genuine demand as the core moat for DeFi protocols.
