TSMC, Unimicron Warn AI Boom Is Straining Fab and Substrate Capacity

Surging demand for AI servers and advanced packaging is putting pressure on capacity beyond leading-edge wafer fabrication. High-end substrates provide the electrical bridge between chips and circuit boards, making them a critical link in AI hardware production. At a SEMICON Taiwan forum on Sept. 2, 2026, TSMC Senior Vice President Cliff Hou said demand for AI capacity remained exceptionally strong, with nearly 20 fabs worldwide being accelerated simultaneously. Unimicron Electronics President Shan-Chieh Chien said AI growth was widening the shortfall in high-end substrate capacity and called for mature-process capacity to complement advanced production, alongside deeper cross-border supply-chain coordination. Neither company disclosed additional investment amounts or completion schedules.
