DOE Selects 278 Projects for Genesis Mission AI Research Push

Launched by President Donald Trump through an executive order on Nov. 24, 2025, the Genesis Mission is a U.S. Department of Energy-led effort spanning 17 national laboratories. It aims to connect government scientific data, supercomputers, experimental facilities, AI-agent frameworks and advanced industry models through a common research platform. The initiative targets breakthroughs in energy, fundamental science and national security, with a goal of doubling the productivity and impact of U.S. research within a decade.

DOE announced the first 278 selected projects at the inaugural Genesis Mission Summit in Washington on July 22, 2026, involving 342 institutions. Universities lead 168 projects, DOE and National Nuclear Security Administration laboratories lead 87, companies lead 19 and nonprofits lead four. The largest single award is a three-year, $60 million Phase II investment, subject to appropriations, for the Prometheus nuclear-energy project, which will apply AI across reactor development, fuel fabrication and legacy-document management.
