Gamgee Wins Y Combinator Backing for AI-Designed Dog Cancer Vaccines
Sydney technology entrepreneur Paul Conyngham turned to artificial intelligence after his dog Rosie was diagnosed with mast cell cancer in May 2024 and failed to respond to surgery, chemotherapy and immunotherapy. Drawing on 17 years in machine learning, he used ChatGPT and computational genomics to identify tumor mutations, then worked with scientists at UNSW to manufacture a personalized mRNA vaccine. The case highlights how AI could lower barriers to bespoke cancer therapies, though it remains a single experimental treatment rather than proof of efficacy.
Rosie received her first injection at the University of Queensland in December 2025; by March 2026, tumors on her legs had shrunk significantly, according to Gamgee. Conyngham founded the company in 2026 to turn the one-off effort into a repeatable canine treatment platform. Gamgee joined Y Combinator’s Summer 2026 batch, with the investment amount undisclosed, and is running its first Australian trial with partners including UNSW, the University of Queensland and the Garvan Institute. In May 2024, Rosie, the eight-year-old dog of Australian AI consulting firm founder Paul Conyngham, was diagnosed with malignant mast cell cancer that failed to respond to chemotherapy or surgery. Conyngham used ChatGPT to devise a treatment plan and AlphaFold to analyze mutated proteins, while bringing in the University of New South Wales (UNSW). The case shows how AI, genetic sequencing and mRNA technology can shorten the development timeline for personalized therapies.
Conyngham paid $3,000 to sequence Rosie's genome. A team led by Pall Thordarson at UNSW's RNA Institute produced the vaccine in less than two months, and a University of Queensland veterinary team administered the first dose in December 2025 and a booster in February 2026. Rosie's energy improved after about six weeks of treatment, and her largest tumor shrank by 75%, though another tumor did not respond. Because she also received immunotherapy, the outcome remains a single case and cannot be considered a cure.
