Taiwan Releases First Survey on AI's Labor Impact in the Financial Sector
Bank SinoPac commissioned the Taiwan Federation of Financial Unions to conduct Taiwan's first examination of AI adoption in the financial sector from a labor-rights perspective, in collaboration with Yu-Fan Chiu, an associate professor at National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University's Institute of Technology Law, and the Gongli Research Association. The report found that AI is currently replacing mainly tasks such as data processing and has yet to cause significant layoffs. However, the efficiency gains have been distributed unevenly, with implications for job security and labor-management negotiations during the transition.
The report, titled "How AI Affects Financial-Sector Employees," was released on March 23, 2026. The survey was conducted from December 2025 to January 2026 and collected 1,453 responses, with banking employees accounting for 68% and insurance employees 18%. Respondents earning more than NT$1.5 million a year reported more pronounced improvements in efficiency, autonomy and promotion prospects. However, about 31% of respondents believed they faced a high or very high likelihood of losing their jobs to AI within 10 years.
