AI Routing Puts Model Transparency Under Scrutiny
AI services are often sold under a fixed model name, but an API request can pass through providers, aggregators and safety classifiers before a response is generated. Operators may reroute traffic based on risk, latency or cost, or serve quantized weights that use less computing power but can alter performance. The practice matters to companies buying inference because undisclosed substitutions can frustrate benchmarking, pricing and compliance controls, while raising a broader legal question: what technical changes are still consistent with selling access to the same model?
Scrutiny has focused on Anthropic, Cursor and OpenRouter. Anthropic says sensitive requests may be handled by a different model, while Cursor and OpenRouter use routing mechanisms that can optimize cost or availability. In a March 6, 2026 update, OpenRouter said its Auto Router carries a $0 routing surcharge and bills only the standard rate of the model selected. The debate now turns on whether services disclose the actual model, host and quantization level clearly enough for customers to audit performance and determine whether the product delivered matches the one purchased.
