AI Chatbots Reshape Search as AEO Gains Ground Among Small Businesses

2 reports · First detected 2026-03-03 · Last active 2026-03-03

OpenAI launched ChatGPT on November 30, 2022, while Google has integrated generative AI into its search results. Users are gradually shifting from clicking website links to receiving synthesized answers directly. The change is forcing traditional search engine optimization, or SEO, to evolve, while answer engine optimization, or AEO, is emerging as a new way for small and medium-sized businesses to build brand credibility and reach prospective customers.

Google launched AI Overviews in the United States on May 14, 2024, placing AI-generated summaries directly on search results pages and changing how business websites attract organic traffic and exposure. Companies have recently begun restructuring content with structured data, clearly identified sources and question-and-answer formats in hopes of being cited by ChatGPT and Google AI. The trend involves no specific transaction value, with performance metrics shifting toward AI recommendation rates and brand visibility.
