Apple Reportedly Plans Apple Intelligence Tools for AI Photo Editing in iOS 27
Apple has expanded its generative AI push through Apple Intelligence in recent years, but the Photos app’s advanced editing capabilities still lag Google’s Magic Editor and Samsung’s Galaxy AI. Adding generative imaging tools in iOS 27 would mark an important step toward strengthening Apple’s on-device image processing and narrowing the competitive gap.
The latest reports say Apple plans to add a dedicated Apple Intelligence Tools section to the Photos app in iOS 27 and other operating systems. The initial release would include three features: background expansion, resolution enhancement and perspective reframing. Reports have not disclosed a formal announcement date, supported device models, subscription pricing or a launch timetable.

The spread of increasingly realistic generative-AI images has made it harder for newsrooms and fact-checkers to establish whether a photograph documents a real event. Apple Reference Image is designed to create evidence at the point of capture, using signed sensor data to produce a tamper-resistant digital negative that can help verify a photo’s origin and integrity.
Apple announced the feature in September 2026, pitching it as a way to demonstrate that an image was captured by an iPhone camera rather than fabricated by generative AI. The system also supports SynthID to help identify material generated or altered by AI, combining camera-based provenance with AI-content detection in a verification workflow aimed in part at journalists.
