AI Raises Bar for Gen Z as Employers Automate Hiring
Generative AI is automating both sides of recruitment. Candidates can tailor résumés, draft cover letters and submit applications at scale, while employers deploy algorithms to source, rank and pre-screen them. The resulting flood of polished, similar-looking submissions can obscure genuine ability and prompt companies to add more assessments. That dynamic is particularly consequential for Gen Z, whose limited experience and professional networks already make the first rung of the career ladder difficult to reach.
LinkedIn said on Jan. 7, 2026, that applications per open U.S. role had doubled since spring 2022. Its survey found 65% of job seekers considered the search harder, while 66% of recruiters struggled more to identify qualified talent. A GMAC survey released June 25, covering more than 600 corporate recruiters across 39 countries, found 33% of employers had replaced some entry-level positions with AI. The proportion reached 40% among technology employers.
