Anthropic Keeps Fable 5, Tightens Subscription Limits

Anthropic introduced Fable 5 and the restricted Mythos 5 in June, extending its most advanced capabilities to coding, knowledge work and scientific research. The two products share an underlying model but use different safeguards: Fable is designed for general availability, while Mythos access is limited to vetted organizations working in sensitive fields such as cybersecurity and life sciences. Anthropic launched Claude Fable 5.1 and Claude Mythos 5.1 on Sept. 1, 2026. Cache-read pricing for Fable fell 75% to $0.25 per million tokens, while input and output rates remained $10 and $50 per million tokens. Anthropic estimates typical workloads will cost 25% less and highly agentic work as much as 45% less. Fable 5.1 scored 52.6% on Terminal-Bench-Science 0.1, up from 24.7% for Fable 5, while revised cyber safeguards cut false-positive blocks by 60%. Eligible enterprise customers can use zero data retention ahead of a phased rollout of customer-controlled Enterprise Frontier Safeguards later this fall.

Artificial intelligence company Anthropic launched its advanced Claude Fable 5 model with no-surcharge access for paid subscribers, later extending the promotional period several times to attract users. The end of the free trial is significant because use of the model will revert to paid, token-based billing, marking a turning point in the commercialization of advanced AI models and directly affecting subscribers’ costs and the competitive landscape.

Anthropic announced a second extension of no-surcharge access to Claude Fable 5, moving the deadline from the previously scheduled dates of July 12 and July 13 to July 19. Pro users will instead receive a $100 credit and must thereafter add funds themselves for token-based billing.

As competition in generative AI intensifies, keeping developers loyal to a platform has become a key battleground for major technology companies. Anthropic's latest tests show that Advisor mode achieved its SWE-bench Pro result at 63% of the cost of using Fable 5 alone, while Orchestrator mode cut the cost to 46% on BrowseComp. Both retained at least 90% of the benchmark score. The data did not disclose actual costs or a release date, but provided clear cost ratios and evaluation results.

Anthropic positions Claude Fable 5 as a flagship model with a million-token context window, designed to work autonomously on tasks for several consecutive days and offering five levels of reasoning control. These capabilities affect the cost, reliability and governance of enterprise AI agent deployments, shifting prompt design from single-turn interactions toward managing extended workflows.

Anthropic's Claude Code is an AI coding tool for developers. The market had expected Fable 5 to use a subscription model with separately purchased credits. Reports did not provide the existing credits' prices in U.S. dollars.

The change was intended to prevent high-frequency automated workloads from consuming capacity meant for everyday conversations and to promote fairness across different use cases.

Anthropic has now postponed the new Agent SDK billing system. Claude subscribers will remain subject to their existing usage limits for the time being, with no immediate switch on June 15. Estimates indicate that current subscriptions may subsidize programmatic use by as much as 30 times the standard cost. Anthropic has yet to announce a launch date for the new system or the monthly allowances for each plan.

Anthropic’s Claude Pro and Max plans previously allowed third-party agent tools such as OpenClaw to use subscription allowances through OAuth tokens, enabling high-volume users to engage in “subscription arbitrage.” Anthropic said agent services consume substantial computing resources and were crowding out capacity for its official Claude and Claude Code products, prompting changes to its authorization and billing policies.

Anthropic said that from April 4, 2026, Pro and Max subscription allowances could no longer be used by third-party tools such as OpenClaw. Users must instead purchase prepaid extra-usage credits or obtain an official API key and pay based on usage. Anthropic later restored OpenClaw integration but shifted billing to “Agent SDK credits,” ending free use of subscription allowances.
