AI-Written Complaint Letters Raise Likelihood of Financial Relief by 6.9 Percentage Points
The outcome of a consumer financial dispute often depends not only on the facts, but also on how the case is presented. The U.S. Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) handles complaints involving banks, credit cards and loans. Researchers examined whether AI could turn angry, disjointed accounts into objective, professional complaints, potentially making access to refunds, account corrections and other forms of relief fairer.
The latest study analyzed more than 1 million CFPB complaints and found that AI-assisted letters were, on average, 6.9 percentage points more likely than consumer-written complaints to secure monetary or nonmonetary relief from financial institutions. The AI did not add facts, but improved tone, structure and the clarity of requests. Available information did not disclose the study’s publication date or the average amount of compensation received.
