Algorand Unveils Roadmap to Achieve Quantum Resistance by 2028
The Algorand Foundation says the digital signatures used by current blockchains could eventually be broken by high-performance quantum computers, putting accounts and onchain assets at risk. Because replacing cryptographic standards requires changes to wallets, nodes and staking mechanisms, public blockchains must plan migrations years in advance, making quantum resistance a critical infrastructure security issue.
Under the foundation’s newly released roadmap, Algorand plans to introduce post-quantum accounts, multisignature wallets and staking support in phases starting in 2026. It aims to roll out broader quantum-resilience upgrades in 2027 and achieve overall quantum resistance by 2028. The announcement did not disclose any investment or budget figures, focusing instead on a timetable for upgrading the core protocol and protecting user assets.
