Itaú Joins ANBIMA Tokenization Pilot With OpenAssets
ANBIMA, Brazil’s Financial and Capital Markets Association, launched the tokenization pilot on Oct. 24, 2025, to simulate the full lifecycle of corporate bonds and investment funds on a private, permissioned distributed ledger. The initiative targets markets of significant scale: Brazilian corporate bond fundraising reached a record 492.8 billion reais in 2025, while the country’s fund industry held 10.8 trillion reais in net assets. The pilot is intended to develop common benchmarks for interoperability, governance and regulation.
A report on Aug. 11, 2026, said Itaú, Latin America’s largest private-sector bank, had teamed up with digital asset infrastructure provider OpenAssets to join the pilot, testing the issuance, trading and settlement of fixed-income securities and investment funds. ANBIMA said on April 30 that it had selected 20 use cases from 39 submissions involving more than 50 institutions. Testing is expected to run for about six months in a controlled environment, with no real funds transferred and no investors participating.

The history behind this eventItaú Deepens Brazil Tokenization Push With OpenAssets Pilot
Itaú Unibanco established Itaú Digital Assets in July 2022 to issue, distribute and safeguard tokenized products, and later joined the Central Bank of Brazil’s Drex pilot for a blockchain-based digital-real platform. The strategy is significant because Brazil’s largest private-sector lender is seeking to move conventional assets such as bonds and investment funds onto programmable infrastructure, potentially reducing transaction friction and broadening access while operating within regulated financial markets.
Itaú and digital-asset infrastructure provider OpenAssets said on Aug. 11, 2026, they would work on ANBIMA’s pilot for tokenized fixed-income securities and investment funds, testing issuance, transfers and settlement. ANBIMA said on April 30 that it selected 20 of 39 proposals for an approximately six-month trial. Separately, a transaction registered on B3 on July 21 used tokens representing 10 dairy cows valued at 120,000 reais to secure 100,000 reais in financing, illustrating tokenization’s move into live agricultural credit.
