AI Voice Agents Move Onto Retail Sales Floors
Generative AI is expanding from text-based chatbots into voice-led retail sales and customer service. Retailers are building agents with large language models such as OpenAI’s GPT-Realtime, enabling systems to understand spoken requests, respond in real time and conduct sales conversations without human intervention. The technology matters because it could give stores an always-on interface for product inquiries and service while changing how staff, call centers and digital channels divide customer-facing work.
Japanese electronics retailer Yamada Denki has deployed a multilingual AI voice agent that operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week, according to the report. The service received positive feedback from 92% of respondents, offering an early indication that shoppers may accept automated voice interactions when they are responsive and accessible. The report did not disclose the deployment date, investment amount, call volume or sample size behind the satisfaction figure.
