Coinbase Opens USDC Payments to AI Agents in Strategic Push

5 reports · First detected 2026-07-24 · Last active 2026-07-24

Coinbase is seeking to turn stablecoins into the settlement layer for autonomous software as AI agents increasingly search, call APIs and buy digital services without a human-operated checkout. Its x402 standard embeds machine-readable payment requests in HTTP and settles primarily in USDC through Coinbase Payments. The strategy matters because conventional card rails were designed for people, while agent commerce requires programmable, instant and low-cost transactions; Coinbase has described the category as one of its “highest-conviction bets.”

Coinbase said on July 23, 2026, that Coinbase Business customers would begin accepting USDC directly from AI agents that week, with no separate merchant integration. It also released the CDP x402 SDK, saying developers can add agent payments to an API, MCP server or web service in three lines of code. As of the June 11 launch of Coinbase for Agents, x402 had processed 75 million transactions worth $24 million over 30 days. Agent visits also overtook human traffic on Base documentation in June.

The history behind this event
AI Agents Emerge as Crypto’s Next Billion Users, Paying in Stablecoins2026-08-24 · 1 reports · similarity 0.83

AI agents — software that can act on a user’s behalf — need payment rails to buy data, computing power and API access without human approval for every transaction. Coinbase’s x402 protocol turns the long-dormant HTTP 402 “Payment Required” status into a machine-to-machine payment standard. Stablecoins are emerging as a natural settlement asset because they can move globally around the clock and support micropayments, making agentic commerce a potentially significant new source of crypto adoption.

As of Aug. 23, 2026, Coinbase said x402 had processed more than 165 million payments worth about $50 million, with an average transaction of roughly 30 cents. About 99% of payments were settled in Circle’s USDC, while the network counted more than 480,000 active AI agents. Lincoln Murr, Coinbase’s head of AI product, compared the market with the “Napster/LimeWire era”: the technology works and usage is expanding, but standards, safeguards and viable business models are still being worked out.

Coinbase Opens Business Payments to AI Agents2026-08-12 · 2 reports · similarity 0.92

Coinbase Business, launched in June 2025, gives companies a single account for accepting crypto payments, reconciling transactions, withdrawing funds and managing digital assets. The unit signed up about 5,000 customers and processed roughly $1 billion in combined payments and trading volume in its first year. Extending the platform to autonomous software agents positions Coinbase to capture emerging machine-to-machine commerce through stablecoin-based settlement.

Coinbase said on July 23, 2026, that Coinbase Business customers could begin accepting automated payments from AI agents through x402, the open payments standard developed and incubated by the exchange. Agent payments require no additional merchant setup and settle instantly in USDC through Coinbase Payments, while the business suite is also adding support for USDT payments. Coinbase Developer Platform separately released an SDK that can add x402 acceptance to an API, MCP server or web service with three lines of code.

Coinbase CEO Casts Crypto as Financial Rails for AI Agents2026-07-28 · 5 reports · similarity 0.84

AI agents can execute tasks and transactions autonomously, but they cannot readily open bank accounts, wait days for wire transfers or operate within a single national system. Coinbase co-founder and Chief Executive Brian Armstrong argues that crypto therefore complements artificial intelligence rather than competing with it, providing real-time, programmable money rails. He calls the emerging model Agentic Finance, or AiFi, built around Coinbase’s Base blockchain, the x402 payments protocol and the USDC stablecoin.

In a July 26, 2026 post on X, Armstrong dismissed calls for crypto companies to pivot to AI as “zero-sum, scarcity thinking,” saying AI’s rise makes digital-asset infrastructure more important. Chainalysis reported in June that AI-agent payments conducted through x402 on Base had exceeded 100 million transactions after roughly nine months of activity. Transactions worth at least $1 accounted for 95% of the total value transferred, the blockchain analytics firm said, offering an early measure of machine-to-machine payment adoption.

Coinbase Launches AI Adviser and Stock Trading in Broader Finance Push2026-06-18 · 4 reports · similarity 0.82

Coinbase has long relied on cryptocurrency trading fees, leaving its revenue vulnerable to crypto market cycles, and posted a net loss of $394.1 million in the first quarter of 2026. As brokerages such as Robinhood expand into crypto, Coinbase is pursuing an “Everything Exchange” strategy that combines stocks, ETFs, derivatives and onchain assets to diversify revenue.

Coinbase unveiled 21 products and features on June 16, 2026. U.S. Coinbase One members can access Coinbase Advisor, which is registered with the SEC and NFA, while Coinbase Advanced supports about 6,000 stocks, ETFs and indexes and allows customers to transfer entire portfolios through ACATS. The company also previewed options, Pre-IPO perpetual contracts and 1:1 tokenized U.S. stocks.

Coinbase and AWS Launch USDC Payment Rails for AI Agents2026-06-16 · 2 reports · similarity 0.81

Coinbase’s x402 is an open payment protocol based on the HTTP 402 “Payment Required” status code. It allows AI agents to purchase APIs, MCP servers and online content on a pay-per-use basis without signing up for subscriptions or waiting for manual checkout. The machine-to-machine payment mechanism is significant because it allows businesses to manage budgets, permissions, compliance and audit records at the same time.

AWS and Coinbase announced a preview of Amazon Bedrock AgentCore Payments on May 7, 2026, with native integration of x402 service discovery and Coinbase wallet infrastructure. AI agents can settle payments instantly in USDC on Base and Solana, pay less than 1 cent per service transaction and autonomously transact through more than 10,000 pay-per-use endpoints.

Coinbase Launches AI Agent Accounts for Automated Crypto Trading and Payments2026-06-12 · 4 reports · similarity 0.89

Coinbase has continued to build out “agentic commerce” since launching AgentKit in 2024 and establishing the x402 payment protocol in 2025, enabling AI to move beyond investment advice and execute trades and payments on users' behalf. Assistants such as ChatGPT and Claude can therefore connect to real assets, bringing authorization controls, cybersecurity and trading risks into sharper focus.

Coinbase launched Coinbase for Agents on June 11, 2026, allowing accounts to connect through MCP or CLI. It already supports cryptocurrency spot and derivatives trading. Agents can analyze prices over the past 30 days and schedule $20 of ETH purchases daily for two consecutive weeks. Users can maintain a separate portfolio, while x402 payments and granular transaction and spending limits will be rolled out progressively.

Coinbase-Backed x402 Adds Batch Settlement for AI Agent Payments2026-05-13 · 1 reports · similarity 0.81

x402 is a Coinbase-backed protocol designed for AI agent payments, enabling agents to automatically purchase services such as computing power and model inference. When micropayments are settled individually onchain, fees can exceed the amount being paid. Reducing settlement costs is therefore critical to scaling the machine economy.

As of July 20, 2026, x402 had added a batch settlement feature that allows AI agents to authorize multiple payments offchain before combining them for onchain settlement. The mechanism targets real-time payments of less than $0.0001 each for computing and inference resources, but the related reporting did not disclose a formal launch date or the extent of the fee reduction.

Coinbase Bets on AI Agent Payment Infrastructure to Drive Growth With USDC and Base2026-04-25 · 2 reports · similarity 0.82

AI agents can autonomously purchase data, computing power and services, but they need low-cost, programmable payment rails that operate around the clock. With crypto markets subdued and its trading business under pressure, Coinbase sees agent payments as an opportunity to diversify revenue. It plans to use USDC as the settlement asset, Base as the low-fee execution layer and x402 to connect websites and APIs.

On March 18, 2026, Coinbase Chief Business Officer Shan Aggarwal said agent payments were one of the company’s top priorities. The same day, Stripe and Tempo released the open MPP standard, while Visa introduced card specifications and an SDK to support the technology. On April 25, Base founder Jesse Pollak said x402 had processed about $48 million in cumulative payments, with roughly 95% of transactions taking place on Base.

Coinbase-Backed AI Payments Protocol x402 Faces Weak Demand as Agentic Commerce Adoption Remains Nascent2026-03-11 · 1 reports · similarity 0.83

Coinbase launched x402 in May 2025, using the HTTP 402 status code and stablecoin settlement to let AI agents automatically make micropayments without accounts or human authorization. The protocol is viewed as infrastructure for “agentic commerce,” but the emergence of genuine demand will help determine whether related AI and cryptocurrency valuations are justified.

According to the latest reporting as of July 2026, x402 processed only about $28,000 in daily on-chain transactions, with most activity still tied to developer testing and no large-scale commercial adoption yet. Although the market has valued its ecosystem at about $7 billion, actual payment demand remains far behind, suggesting that autonomous transactions by AI agents are still some way from maturity.
