Coinbase Lets Businesses Accept AI-Agent Crypto Payments
Coinbase Business is the exchange’s crypto account and payments platform for companies. Coinbase introduced x402 in May 2025 to attach stablecoin payments to standard HTTP requests, allowing autonomous AI agents to buy data, application programming interfaces and digital services without cards or manual checkout. The model gives machine-to-machine commerce a native settlement rail for frequent, low-value transactions that traditional payment systems struggle to process economically.
Coinbase said on July 23, 2026, that Business customers could accept payments initiated by AI agents through x402 without additional merchant setup. Coinbase Payments processes the transactions and settles proceeds instantly in USDC, while the company also added support for customers paying in USDT. As of July 15, x402 had handled about 75 million payments worth $24 million over the previous 30 days, equal to an average transaction of roughly 32 cents.

The history behind this eventCoinbase Opens USDC Payments to AI Agents in Strategic Push
Coinbase is seeking to turn stablecoins into the settlement layer for autonomous software as AI agents increasingly search, call APIs and buy digital services without a human-operated checkout. Its x402 standard embeds machine-readable payment requests in HTTP and settles primarily in USDC through Coinbase Payments. The strategy matters because conventional card rails were designed for people, while agent commerce requires programmable, instant and low-cost transactions; Coinbase has described the category as one of its “highest-conviction bets.”
Coinbase said on July 23, 2026, that Coinbase Business customers would begin accepting USDC directly from AI agents that week, with no separate merchant integration. It also released the CDP x402 SDK, saying developers can add agent payments to an API, MCP server or web service in three lines of code. As of the June 11 launch of Coinbase for Agents, x402 had processed 75 million transactions worth $24 million over 30 days. Agent visits also overtook human traffic on Base documentation in June.
Coinbase Launches AI Agent Accounts for Automated Crypto Trading and Payments
Coinbase has continued to build out “agentic commerce” since launching AgentKit in 2024 and establishing the x402 payment protocol in 2025, enabling AI to move beyond investment advice and execute trades and payments on users' behalf. Assistants such as ChatGPT and Claude can therefore connect to real assets, bringing authorization controls, cybersecurity and trading risks into sharper focus.
Coinbase launched Coinbase for Agents on June 11, 2026, allowing accounts to connect through MCP or CLI. It already supports cryptocurrency spot and derivatives trading. Agents can analyze prices over the past 30 days and schedule $20 of ETH purchases daily for two consecutive weeks. Users can maintain a separate portfolio, while x402 payments and granular transaction and spending limits will be rolled out progressively.
Coinbase Bets on AI Agent Payment Infrastructure to Drive Growth With USDC and Base
AI agents can autonomously purchase data, computing power and services, but they need low-cost, programmable payment rails that operate around the clock. With crypto markets subdued and its trading business under pressure, Coinbase sees agent payments as an opportunity to diversify revenue. It plans to use USDC as the settlement asset, Base as the low-fee execution layer and x402 to connect websites and APIs.
On March 18, 2026, Coinbase Chief Business Officer Shan Aggarwal said agent payments were one of the company’s top priorities. The same day, Stripe and Tempo released the open MPP standard, while Visa introduced card specifications and an SDK to support the technology. On April 25, Base founder Jesse Pollak said x402 had processed about $48 million in cumulative payments, with roughly 95% of transactions taking place on Base.
