Taiwan Central Bank Releases CBDC Summary Report
Taiwan’s central bank began researching central bank digital currency (CBDC) in 2019. A retail CBDC could serve as a digital form of New Taiwan dollar cash, with a focus on payment resilience and digital transformation. The central bank stressed that issuance would merely change the form of money and would not create additional money or fuel inflation. Likewise, purchasing stablecoins with deposits or cash is an asset conversion, not an expansion of the money supply.
The central bank released its public-engagement summary report on April 15, 2026, compiling feedback from 1,714 participants and 219 institutions across nine events held in northern, central and southern Taiwan in 2025. It concluded that Taiwan’s payment system is convenient and that there is no urgent need or timetable for issuing a retail CBDC. Preliminary plans would cap registered wallets for individuals at NT$100,000 and anonymous wallets for foreign visitors at NT$30,000.
