AI Wave Disrupts India's IT Outsourcing Industry as Leaders Accelerate Transformation

1 reports · First detected 2026-03-24 · Last active 2026-03-24

For the past 30 years, India's IT outsourcing industry has relied on a vast pool of engineering talent to provide software maintenance, testing and customer service. Its output exceeded $315 billion in fiscal 2026 and accounted for about 80% of India's services exports. Generative AI can automate coding and business processes, prompting a reassessment of the industry's traditional labor-based pricing model and the middle-class jobs it supports.

The Nifty IT index had fallen more than 20% year to date as of March 24, following Anthropic's launch of enterprise automation tools in early February 2026. TCS has partnered with OpenAI, and its AI business generates about $1.8 billion in annualized revenue. Infosys has teamed up with Anthropic and said productivity in some processes rose by 40%–50%, while Wipro plans to invest $1 billion over three years in its transformation.
