OpenAI Launches ChatGPT for Clinicians to Support Clinical Decision-Making

Staffing shortages and administrative burdens in U.S. healthcare continue to grow, while clinicians must also keep pace with a rapidly expanding body of medical literature. A 2026 American Medical Association survey found that 72% of physicians were already using AI in clinical practice, up from 48% a year earlier. OpenAI is therefore bringing ChatGPT into care consultations, medical documentation and research, positioning it as an aid to professional judgment rather than a replacement for physicians.

OpenAI launched ChatGPT for Clinicians on April 22, 2026, offering it free of charge to verified U.S. healthcare professionals at a cost of $0. It provides citation-backed medical search and research, as well as optional BAA support for HIPAA compliance. Before launch, physicians rated 99.6% of 6,924 real-world conversations as safe and accurate. GPT-5.4 also outperformed human physicians on HealthBench Professional.
