MediaTek Set to Overtake Broadcom in Google TPU Shipments

Google’s custom Tensor Processing Units are central to the company’s artificial-intelligence infrastructure, with Broadcom historically playing a major role in their development. As generative AI drives demand for computing capacity and raises data-center costs, Google’s decision to bring MediaTek into its TPU supply chain could reshape competition in the custom AI accelerator market and reduce its reliance on a single chip partner.

JPMorgan said MediaTek’s Google TPUv8t has progressed smoothly into mass production, aided by a modular packaging design that offers an estimated 43% cost advantage. The bank expects MediaTek’s shipments to surpass Broadcom’s in 2027 as Google increasingly directs TPU orders to the Taiwanese chipmaker. Broadcom’s position faces additional pressure because it lacks a clearly defined proposal for the next-generation TPUv9, according to the report.

Google is continuing to expand its in-house TPU program to reduce its reliance on general-purpose AI accelerators and strengthen its cloud AI computing capabilities. MediaTek is deepening the partnership through its advanced-process and custom ASIC design capabilities. Securing orders for the upgraded TPU would help the chipmaker expand its data-center business and reduce its dependence on the smartphone chip market.

TF International Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said MediaTek had secured the exclusive order for Google's upgraded TPU v9, dubbed “Triggerfish.” The chip is focused on AI agents and reinforcement learning and is priced about 30% higher than the standard version. Production is expected to begin in late 2027 and ramp up in 2028. Neither company has disclosed the total value of the order.
