King Charles Convenes AI Leaders as Safety Warnings Mount
The rapid advance of frontier AI has shifted the safety debate beyond bias and copyright toward autonomous agents, cyberattacks and recursive self-improvement — systems helping to build increasingly capable successors. Britain previously convened developers and governments at the 2023 Bletchley Park AI Safety Summit. King Charles III is now using the monarchy’s convening power to provide neutral ground for rivals to consider shared principles that keep development centered on human welfare, an issue with implications for national security, labor markets and corporate oversight.
Reports on Sept. 13-14 said Charles would host about 30 participants this week at Dumfries House in Scotland, with leaders from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google DeepMind and Nvidia expected; the Ditchley Foundation has drafted a proposed charter. The gathering follows Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei’s Sept. 12 warning that, within six to 12 months, a swarm of AI agents could potentially seize control of the internet through a persistent botnet and cause hundreds of billions of dollars in damage. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and xAI’s Elon Musk subsequently backed calls to slow frontier development.

The history behind this eventKing Charles III Meets Tech Leaders to Discuss AI and Venture Capital Ecosystem
King Charles III convened leaders from technology companies including Nvidia, AMD, Amazon and Apple during a visit to the United States. The discussion focused on the funding “valley of death” that startups often face as they move from research and development to commercialization. The issue is central to whether Britain and the United States can turn research breakthroughs in AI, quantum technology and other fields into industries and companies operating at scale.
Six technology leaders attended the latest meeting, including Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and Apple CEO Tim Cook. Huang said AI, quantum computing and robotics offer enormous potential, but an active venture capital ecosystem is now needed most to support a startup culture. No specific investment amounts or funding commitments were announced at the meeting.
