Nvidia Backs Chinese Open-Source AI, Warns White House on Curbs

Chinese open-source models including DeepSeek and Alibaba’s Qwen are gaining traction among developers, making them an increasingly important part of the global generative AI ecosystem. Nvidia’s effort to optimize its hardware for those models could broaden demand for its computing platform, but it also places the chipmaker at the center of tensions between commercial growth, U.S. national-security priorities and Washington’s technology controls on China.

Nvidia recently warned in a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission that tighter White House restrictions on Chinese AI models or related technology could hurt its revenue and impede the open-source ecosystem. The warning comes as the technology industry broadly pushes back against premature limits on open models. Nvidia’s continued support for DeepSeek and Qwen underscores how its open-source strategy is becoming increasingly entangled with U.S.-China technology policy.
