Citizens Bank Launches $300 Million AI-Led Digital Transformation
Citizens Financial Group President Brendan Coughlin launched “Reimagine the Bank” in July 2025, committing $300 million over three years to 47 initiatives. The program uses AI to overhaul customer service, fraud prevention, KYC/AML, credit underwriting and operational processes, aiming to improve employee productivity and the customer experience. It underscores how regional banks are moving toward enterprise-wide digital transformation.
Citizens reported first-quarter results on April 16, 2026, with net income of $517 million, up 39% from a year earlier. Earnings per share rose 47% to $1.13, while net interest income increased 1.6% from the previous quarter. The bank expects agentic AI to handle more than half of retail customer-service calls by the end of 2026 and is targeting about $450 million in annualized pre-tax benefits by the end of 2028.
