OpenAI Tests Outcome-Based Pricing With Major Customers
Enterprise AI has traditionally been sold by seat, token or computing usage, leaving customers to pay even when a task fails. Outcome-based pricing shifts part of that risk to the vendor and ties spending to measurable results. The model is already established in customer service: Intercom charges $0.99 for each case resolved by its Fin AI Agent and does not bill for attempts that fail to produce a chargeable outcome.
OpenAI has begun offering the arrangement to a select group of major customers, The Information reported on Aug. 31. One example would trigger payment only when the AI handles a customer-support interaction from start to finish. OpenAI has not publicly announced the program, and the participating companies, prices, contract terms and criteria for success remain undisclosed. The approach marks a shift from charging for tokens consumed to selling completed work.
