Mastercard Expands Virtual Card Platform With New B2B Controls
Corporate payments have lagged consumer finance in digitization, with wire transfers, checks and fragmented systems still complicating approvals, reconciliation and fraud controls. Mastercard has estimated the serviceable commercial-payments market at $80 trillion. Virtual card numbers can be issued instantly with preset limits, expiry dates and merchant restrictions, while integrating into enterprise resource planning and accounts-payable software. That makes them an increasingly important tool for companies seeking to automate B2B spending without sacrificing oversight or exposing underlying account credentials.
On July 23, 2026, Mastercard expanded Mastercard In Control with Issuer Enforced Controls, enhanced Clearing Controls and broader embedded-payment access through its Commercial Connect API. The issuer controls set baseline spending caps, transaction limits and validity periods when a virtual card is created, while clearing controls can block invalid transactions and manage payment timing. Mastercard said its VCN ecosystem spans 43 countries and 174 currencies, and that fraud rates on virtual cards are less than one-fifth those on non-virtual cards. Citi is live with both controls and is expected to become the first issuer to roll them out globally later in 2026.
