Mastercard and Union Bank of Taiwan Launch Taiwan's First Stripe-Free Mastercard

Credit card magnetic stripes are vulnerable to skimming and cloning, making them less secure than chips, contactless payments and tokenized transactions. As mobile QR-code and contactless payments become more widespread, Mastercard has continued to phase out magnetic stripes. Its partnership with Union Bank of Taiwan marks Taiwan's formal transition toward stripe-free physical payment cards.

Mastercard recently announced the launch of the Union M World Card with Union Bank of Taiwan, Taiwan's first Mastercard without a magnetic stripe. Designed for travel and everyday spending, the card combines AI-powered risk detection with tokenization technology to provide multiple layers of protection. Available information did not disclose the exact launch date, annual fee or reward amounts.
