Google’s Android ID Checks Threaten Crypto Wallet Sideloading

Android has long allowed users to install APK files outside Google Play, providing a crucial distribution channel for open-source software, cryptocurrency wallets and privacy tools. Google’s decision to extend developer identity checks beyond its official store would broaden its control over the ecosystem, raising concerns about anonymous development, software freedom and users’ ability to run applications without relying on a centralized marketplace.

Google said it will introduce mandatory developer verification in phases, with a global rollout planned for 2027. Once the policy is fully enforced, APKs published by developers who have not completed verification will no longer be eligible for sideloading on covered Android devices. Privacy advocates and open-source communities have pushed back, warning that crypto wallets and privacy-focused apps that depend on direct distribution could lose a vital route to users.
