Intel Yield Gains Raise Questions Over Former TSMC R&D Executive and Suspected Data Leak
Intel has long sought to narrow TSMC’s lead in advanced manufacturing processes, where yields are crucial to chip costs, mass-production capacity and foundry competitiveness. Former TSMC R&D executive Wei-Jen Lo’s move to Intel has prompted outside observers to link his role to the company’s technical advances. It has also renewed scrutiny of semiconductor talent flows, trade-secret protection and risks to Taiwan’s national security.
Intel reported strong financial results for the first quarter of 2026 and substantially improved its advanced-process yields, although available information did not specify its revenue, profit or exact yield figures. TSMC has sued Lo, accusing him of allegedly disclosing critical 2-nanometer data. No final judicial ruling has been issued, and concrete evidence is still needed to determine whether Lo directly contributed to Intel’s yield improvement.
