Shopify Introduces Agentic AI Personal Shopping Assistant to Reshape E-Commerce Search

1 reports · First detected 2026-03-17 · Last active 2026-03-17

Shopify President Harley Finkelstein sees Agentic AI as a new gateway to e-commerce. The goal is for AI agents to understand consumers’ needs and shopping contexts, replacing traditional search tools that merely list products based on keywords. The agents would also help shoppers select products and complete transactions, changing how merchants reach customers.

Finkelstein recently said Shopify is investing heavily in Agentic AI to enable personal shopping assistants to provide contextual recommendations and purchasing services. Reports did not disclose a formal launch date, investment amount, number of participating merchants or transaction volume. At this stage, the focus remains on the company’s strategic direction, rather than a product launch with disclosed quantitative results.

AI Search Drives Shopify’s Long-Tail Sales2026-08-14 · 1 reports · similarity 0.81

Online retail search has traditionally reinforced a winner-takes-most cycle: products that already sell well receive more visibility, generate more purchases and rise further in rankings. Shopify says generative AI can weaken that loop by interpreting shoppers’ detailed, natural-language requests and matching them with less obvious products. The shift could make niche inventory more commercially viable for merchants and reduce their dependence on bestseller lists or broad, high-traffic categories.

In its latest earnings report, Shopify said 75% of purchases referred by AI came from outside the 100 most popular product categories, indicating that discovery is spreading into retail’s long tail. The Canadian commerce platform also said AI-referred traffic and orders generated from those visits had each tripled from the earlier comparison period. Shopify did not disclose the dollar value of those transactions or provide a category-level breakdown.
