Apple’s John Ternus Takes CEO Role as Cook Moves to Chairman

Apple’s leadership transition comes as the iPhone maker faces pressure to prove it can turn generative artificial intelligence into compelling consumer products. Elevating longtime hardware chief John Ternus signals a renewed emphasis on product engineering, while the integration of Apple Intelligence, a rebuilt Siri and large language models running on Apple Silicon will be a central test of the company’s strategy beyond the iPhone.

Apple announced the succession plan on April 20, 2026, naming Ternus, a 25-year company veteran and senior vice president of Hardware Engineering, to succeed Tim Cook effective September 1. Cook moved to executive chairman after 15 years as chief executive and will continue advising the company and engaging policymakers. Ternus now takes responsibility for advancing new hardware and accelerating Apple’s effort to deliver AI features across its devices.
