Meta has sought patent protection for a camera system that combines artificial-intelligence facial recognition with behavioral logging, extending its push to add contextual computing to smart glasses and head-mounted devices. The technology could identify people by name and make recorded footage searchable by who appeared, when an encounter occurred and what actions were detected. Such capabilities may make wearable cameras more useful, but they also heighten concerns over consent, biometric data and surveillance of bystanders.

Patent materials highlighted in recent reports describe software that can automatically detect and record a person’s actions, then assemble video highlights in response to requests such as who did what and when. The filing includes privacy safeguards, according to the reports, though those measures have not dispelled concerns about whether people would know they were being identified or tracked. A patent application does not confirm that Meta will commercialize the system or indicate when any related product feature might be released.
