Facial recognition uses AI to analyze facial features for identification or identity verification, with applications spanning law enforcement, schools, wearable devices and fraud prevention. Meta’s smart glasses were recently reported to have on-device recognition capabilities and have raised privacy concerns over unauthorized recording. China has expanded monitoring in schools and of designated individuals, while UK police have increased deployments of mobile facial recognition. As the technology moves into everyday devices and public spaces, its accuracy, data governance, informed consent requirements and the limits of surveillance remain important areas to watch.
