Grasshopper Bank’s Google Gemini AI Agent Fuels Debate Over SaaS Disruption

New York-based digital bank Grasshopper Bank began deploying enterprise AI in January 2024, adopting Google Gemini Enterprise under the name “Hopper.” Bank due diligence has traditionally relied on manual work and SaaS tools to check OFAC sanctions lists and external data. Whether in-house agents can replace purchased software has therefore made Grasshopper a key case study in the so-called “SaaSpocalypse.”

American Banker reported on March 4, 2026, that Grasshopper built an enhanced due diligence model with Hopper in less than three weeks while retaining human authority over final decisions. The bank avoided a six-figure software bill estimated at about $100,000 annually. On March 17, Chief Technology Officer Peter Chapman said AI was saving about 2,000 hours a month and had enabled the bank to meet its full-year target early, in July 2025.
