MIT Study Finds AI Has Yet to Touch 92% of Work Tasks

The MIT Center for Collective Intelligence released a study in March 2026 that organized 20,000 work activities from a U.S. Department of Labor occupational database into a taxonomy of 40,000 nodes, then compared them with commercial AI and robotics deployments. The findings showed that automation remains highly concentrated. Humans retain a critical advantage in complex tasks involving authorized decision-making, teamwork and interpreting physical environments.

A report published on April 1 said the study examined 13,275 commercial AI applications and 20.8 million robots tracked by the International Federation of Robotics. Existing AI covers only 8% of work activities, leaving 92% completely untouched. Content generation, information retrieval and similar uses account for just 1.6% of tasks but capture more than 60% of AI's market value, highlighting that the next wave of opportunity remains in core enterprise workflows.
