Google and Mastercard Contribute Agentic Commerce Standards to FIDO Alliance
The FIDO Alliance, which has long developed passwordless authentication standards, is expanding its scope to commerce conducted by AI agents. Its work will focus on how agents obtain user authorization, verify identities, execute instructions and complete payments. As AI agents increasingly shop on consumers' behalf, common standards that are auditable and protect privacy have become critical to reducing the risks of impersonation and erroneous transactions.
The FIDO Alliance has announced a new initiative to develop standards for AI agent interactions and commerce. Google will contribute its Agent Payments Protocol (AP2), while Mastercard will provide its Verifiable Intent framework, forming the technical foundation for verifying user intent and transaction authorization. As of July 20, 2026, the alliance had not announced a formal launch date, investment amount or participation fees.

The rise of autonomous AI agents is shifting e-commerce from human-led activity toward “agentic commerce,” in which AI acts on users’ behalf, creating new challenges for conventional security and authentication systems. AI agents that execute unauthorized transactions or operate on tampered instructions could threaten digital finance. Establishing a trusted authentication and payment architecture to secure AI transactions and verify identities has therefore become an urgent priority for the global fintech and cybersecurity sectors.
The FIDO Alliance launched an agentic commerce standards initiative on April 28, 2026, and formed a working group focused on authentication and payment technologies. Generative AI leader OpenAI has also joined the alliance’s board, working alongside companies including Google and Mastercard to develop a trusted framework for agent-led transactions. The standards will build on Google’s AP2 protocol and Mastercard’s Verifiable Intent framework.
