Mastercard Puts Trust at Center of AI Payments Shift

1 reports · First detected 2026-07-23 · Last active 2026-07-23

The payments industry is shifting from purchases initiated by people to transactions researched, selected and executed by AI agents. That transition could redraw control over authorization, customer relationships, authentication and liability, making trust a competitive requirement rather than a supporting feature. For networks such as Mastercard, preserving security, privacy, transparency and recourse will determine whether agentic commerce can move beyond pilots and operate at global scale.

At ACI Worldwide’s two-day Payments Unleashed EMEA forum in London on June 29-30, 2026, Mastercard Vice President of Product Management Patricia Ferrer joined executives from Amazon and ACI to discuss the agentic buyer. The session focused on enabling agent-initiated payments while limiting fraud and false declines. The trust gap remains stark: an ACI-commissioned YouGov survey of 2,080 UK adults in June found only 17% would trust an agent with their payment data.

Mastercard and DBS Bank Complete Taiwan’s First Agentic AI Payment2026-03-26 · 2 reports · similarity 0.81

Agentic AI payments allow AI systems, with consumers’ authorization, to search for options, make selections and complete payments on their behalf. The key challenges are authenticating the agent’s identity, protecting card data and preserving user control. Mastercard launched Agent Pay in the United States in 2025 and expanded it to Asia-Pacific in 2026. Its collaboration with DBS Bank (Taiwan) marks the formal entry of AI-powered commerce into real-world transactions in Taiwan.

On March 26, 2026, Mastercard and DBS Bank (Taiwan) announced that they had completed Taiwan’s first authenticated agentic AI transaction. The transaction amount was not disclosed. A consumer entered the pickup and drop-off locations, time and number of passengers for an airport transfer into an AI chat interface. After matching available options, the AI booked and paid for the consumer’s selection with authorization using a linked Mastercard, while a Mastercard Agentic Token authenticated the agent’s identity.
