Smartphones Remake Store Aisles and Checkout

1 reports · First detected 2026-07-24 · Last active 2026-07-24

Smartphones have evolved from shopping aids into the main interface linking e-commerce and physical retail. Shoppers now research products, compare prices, check reviews and promotions, and pay with digital wallets while standing in store aisles. The shift matters because it erodes the boundary between online and offline commerce, forcing retailers to connect inventory, loyalty programs, offers and payments into one consistent journey.

A June 2026 Global Digital Shopping Index from PYMNTS Intelligence, commissioned by Visa Acceptance Solutions, surveyed 5,841 consumers and 1,185 merchants across the United States, Brazil and the United Arab Emirates. Mobile devices were involved in 53% of purchases, including product research, price comparison, review checks and in-store payments. The findings show that the phone has become retail’s operating system even inside physical stores, while merchants face pressure to modernize checkout and unify channels.
