Apple Overhauls Siri as AI Rivals Race Ahead

Apple launched Siri in 2011 and helped establish the smartphone voice-assistant market, but the product steadily lost ground as weak comprehension and limited cross-app execution frustrated users. The company promised a generative-AI overhaul at WWDC 2024 under Apple Intelligence, then missed its original timetable by roughly two years. That delay matters because OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Google’s Gemini and a growing class of AI agents now handle coding, reasoning and creative work, raising expectations far beyond conventional voice commands.

Apple unveiled Siri AI at WWDC on June 8, 2026, opening developer testing the same day across iOS 27, iPadOS 27, macOS 27 and visionOS 27 ahead of a broader rollout in the fall. The rebuilt assistant adds personal-context understanding, on-screen awareness, web knowledge, cross-app actions and a dedicated app for revisiting conversations.
